so as of 5.1, we've been getting a lot more information about the Echo and the dynamics behind it and how it's used, as well as a variety of different skills associated with it. All Echo users are immune to being tempered, another thing I'll go into briefly, and can see Ascians even when they're not riding a body. As of 5.2, we have:

Warrior of Light/Darkness/etc: able to go back into the past and review memories of someone in front of them, receive visions of battles and work through the failures until you see the face of victory (aka all your wipes are non-canon until we clear it), able to understand all sentient creatures. Fanon theory is battle telegraphs are another part of our echo

1.0 Warrior of Light: was able to go in and "live" in echo memories as if they were there at the time.

Krile: Able to relive the memories of a person in front of us and understand the speech of all creatures, sentient or not.

Minfilia: A strong connection with Hydaelyn and spoke to Her on the regular. Unclear if she was able to see memories or not.

Arenvald: Unknown what his Echo does yet other than make him immune to tempering. He's the only other battle-willing Echo-user in game, so his might reflect ours

Mikoto: Able to see brief glimpses into the future.

Fordola: Fake!Echo, but is the other battle-ready Echo user. She probably has our fanon power on the ability to see telegraphs, but what it is definitely related to better reflexes and the ability to read her opponents moves before they do them. She is also able to see the memories of everyone around her and unable to turn it off, so she's constantly bombarded with them.

Zenos: Can body-ride a primal and see souls. Potentially battle related stuff, but he was pretty epic in that before he got fake!Echo implanted into him.

ShB has been a lore heavy expansion and they've definitely decided on some things and are bringing them into enough focuses that there is Something Going To Happen with them.

The Nature of Tempering:

This one made me go oh SHIT when Alisae made some completely off the cuff comment in 5.1 about Ga Bu and the treatment she's working on with the light-sick innmates of Journey's End. They were overaspected with Light Aether, "just like Ga Bu is over aspected with Earth aether" because that made me realized why Amdapor had what we now call Sin Eaters as their magical guardians and that we've met the water version because Leviathin got pissed off at Captain What's-his-face and his crew and blasted them with water aether until they were transformed into monsters (which we murder in Sastasha HM).

Which means tempering is someone being overaspected with a specific element, and echo users are immune to that because the nature of the Echo means our souls have more resistence to being over-aspected. We're the most epic of all and it took the power of four Lightwardens to overrun our natural defense.

What is the Blessing of Light?

That's the next question and if that raised our resistence higher than other echo users. There's a lot of questions on the nature of Hydaelyn in relation to Zodiark and what happened in Amaurot, but going by how she's acted for the past four expansions, I think she's firmly pro-us and keeping the Ascians at bay and we're very against whatever they're doing.

What are They Doing with the Echo?

So now they've introduced what actually awakens an Echo in a person (seeing the Amaurot starshower), they can use that as a code of Echo users in the past coming in and being awesome. We've seen it with a powerful Vii mage/empress (introduced roughly the same time as the dynamic came in), and now a second one in the Relic quests about the Grunhildr's Blades. We've had some Warrior of Light in the past things come up last expansion (Tenzen in the Four Lords quests, also heavily implied to be one of our past lives, and Ramza in Ivalice), and I wonder if they'll somehow add the shooting stars to that as well in retrospect. The Ivalice stuff is coming around again and I suspect the Four Lords will be as well, even if I don't know where yet.

It'll be interesting where they'll go with that in the future.

They introduced a sort of ... pseudo-Echo, I guess, that requires the see-the-past Echo to use but let's us go into a person's head to see a memory from their point of view, which is both more and less useful than our normal Echo. We can control the memory, interact with it (though not change it), and interact with the owner (and any other echo users we dragged along with us) about it, but it's not completely accurate because the person who owns the memory can change it. We got Gerolt's, which switched from an argument between him and Rowena and went into a wedding memory, and Cid's, whose was actively trying to stop us from going further because he'd repressed what happened.

The most interesting thing about this is that it's the closest we've gotten in game to 1.0 Echo. And they seem to be pulling out a lot of 1.0 things into what's going on now.

I'll keep this here but unlocked. I'm not thinking anyone will come across it, but there's a lot of here to unpack and I want to keep a record of it.

This has been a valuable playing experience. It's taught me all the ways how to not moderate a game or be a player, and the danger signs I shouldn't ignore when a player, or players, are toxic as fuck. But it is time to get out of it now.

IC drama and conflict is the mechanism that runs games. It's required in some form, or else the game is really boring and has no forward motion into something better. But you can't start up IC drama without clearing it with people ahead of time. ICC = ICA is a thing and so some drama can't be avoided, even if you want to, but it's communicated and everyone is on a similar page. IC drama that is used to attack and bully is an entirely different issue and I just saw that happen tonight.

Got more information and shed some light into the motivation why it went down. Didn't make me any more sympathetic, but at least I'm less confused. It was clearly an attempt to chase out of the game, and it worked to chase out at least four players. To quote B99: Cool motive, still murder. I was more sympathetic to the last bit of toxic player drama, but it doesn't change it from being toxic.
